Tongchuan Travel Guide: Chenlu Kiln Village and Yaowang Mountain

Seventy kilometres north of Xi’an, where the Guanzhong plain meets the loess hills, sits a small Shaanxi city that serious ceramics fans already know and almost everyone else misses. This Tongchuan travel guide covers a prefecture where one village has fired porcelain continuously for 1,400 years and a wooded mountain honours China’s most famous physician. We’ve sent travellers here as a half-day escape from Xi’an and the Chenlu kilns alone are worth the trip — the whole town is built from broken pots.

Why Visit Tongchuan

Tongchuan (铜川) is a prefecture-level city in central Shaanxi, an easy run north of the capital. Its fame rests on Yaozhou ware (耀州窑), the green-glazed stoneware that was among the finest in northern Song China, made in these hills for over six centuries. The living centre of that craft is Chenlu, a terraced village where every wall, path and roof is patched with kiln wasters and shattered bowls. Add Yaowang Mountain, the sacred peak of the Tang “Medicine King” Sun Simiao, and you get history you can touch without the Xi’an crowds. It is a natural Tongchuan day trip from Xian and a perfect add-on to a Shaanxi loop.

Best Time to Visit Tongchuan

April to June — the best window. 15–28°C, dry, blossom on the hills, and good light for Chenlu’s stacked lanes. This is the best time to visit Tongchuan for walking the kiln village and climbing Yaowang.

September to October. 12–25°C, clear, with autumn colour on Yaowang Mountain. Avoid the 1–7 October holiday.

November to March. Cold, −3 to 10°C, with valley haze and occasional snow on the higher sites. Chenlu is still open and wonderfully empty, but dress warm.

July to August. Hot, 26–35°C, and the wettest months; fine for the village, less so for the mountain hikes.

Things to Do in Tongchuan

Chenlu Ancient Kiln Town

The reason to come. Chenlu ancient kiln town pottery has been made here without a break since the Tang dynasty — local lore says “the fires have never gone cold for 1,400 years.” The village climbs a bowl-shaped valley, and because good clay was scarce, generations paved their lanes and built their house walls from rejected kiln shelves and smashed bowls, so the whole place glitters with shards in the sun. You can watch potters throw at the wheel, buy everyday bowls for ¥10–50 (US$1.50–7), and even try the wheel yourself at some workshops for ¥30–60. The Yaozhou ware legacy is visible in the green-glazed pieces still produced. Allow half a day; stay for sunset when the terraces glow. It is a textbook stop in our China off-the-beaten-path guide.

Yaowang Mountain (药王山)

Just south of the city in Yaozhou district, this wooded limestone hill is sacred to Sun Simiao (孙思邈), the Tang physician called the “Medicine King,” who is said to have lived and gathered herbs here. The site holds a Ming temple complex, dozens of Northern Dynasty and Tang stone inscriptions and Buddhist grottoes, and a grove of old drug-herb plants labelled for visitors. The Yaowang Mountain Tongchuan tickets run about ¥60–80 (US$8–11). Allow two hours; the cliff carvings are the highlight for history lovers. The steps are moderate — take water in summer.

Yaozhou Kiln Museum (耀州窑博物馆)

In Huangbao town, this museum sits on the excavated northern Song kiln site, with dragon kilns, waster piles and the best collection of Yaozhou green ware anywhere. Entry is about ¥20–40 (US$3–6) and it pairs perfectly with Chenlu — see the museum’s finished masterpieces, then the living village where the craft continues. If you want the national context, our China porcelain Jingdezhen guide contrasts these northern wares with the southern imperial kilns.

Zhaojin and Xuejiacai (照金·薛家寨)

North of the city, Zhaojin is a revolutionary base area of the 1930s with a large memorial hall, while the nearby Xuejiacai cliffs hold fortified red-rock caves reached by a cable car and steep paths. Entry to the scenic area is about ¥60–90 (US$8–13) plus cable car. It is “red tourism” rather than ancient history, but the cliff scenery is real.

Yuhua Palace Forest Park (玉华宫)

A Tang summer palace where the monk Xuanzang spent his last years translating scriptures, now a quiet forest park with ruins and cool shade. Entry is modest, around ¥30–50 (US$4–7). Good on a hot day.

Where to Stay in Tongchuan

Budget — ¥110–180 (US$15–25). City chain hotels near the bus and train stations. Clean, app check-in.

Mid-range — ¥240–400 (US$33–56). Business hotels in the Wangyi district, the practical base.

Splurge — ¥500–800 (US$70–110). A few comfortable city hotels; none remarkable.

For Chenlu, a handful of guesthouses (¥150–300 / US$21–42) let you stay in the kiln village overnight — worth it for the evening and morning light. All register foreign passports.

What to Eat in Tongchuan

Northern Shaanxi cooking: wheat, vinegar and chilli.

  • Chenlu clay-pot stew (坩埚). The village’s signature: meat and vegetables slow-cooked in a small ceramic pot, ¥25–45.
  • Qishan-style noodles. Sour, oily, chili-flecked wheat noodles, ¥12–20.
  • Rou jia mo (肉夹馍). The Shaanxi pork flatbread, ¥10–15.
  • Yaowang herb chicken. A local dish nodding to the Medicine King, simmered with herbs.
  • Buckwheat and millet. Highland grains common north of the plain.

For a wider Shaanxi food and history route, the Baoji travel guide adds the Zhou bronzes an hour west.

Sample Itinerary: One Day from Xi’an

  • 08:00 coach or EMU north from Xi’an
  • 09:30 Yaozhou Kiln Museum (1.5 hr)
  • 11:30 lunch in Tongchuan city
  • 13:00 Chenlu kiln village (half day, try the wheel)
  • 17:00 Yaowang Mountain if time, or return

Practical Tips

  • Chenlu light. Morning and late afternoon are best; midday is flat and the lanes are steep.
  • Two sites, one craft. Do the Yaozhou Museum first, then Chenlu, to see finished ware then the living kilns.
  • Passport. Trains, hotels and some ticket offices need it.
  • Cash. Chenlu potters and small stalls may not take cards; keep ¥100.
  • Hire a car. For Chenlu plus Yaowang in one day, a driver (¥300–400) saves waiting on buses.
  • Background. The city’s place in Shaanxi’s ceramic history is summarised at Wikipedia’s Tongchuan page — useful before you go.
