Most foreign travellers meet Hengyang as a name on a departure board somewhere between Changsha and Guangzhou, and stay on the train. That is a mistake worth correcting. Ninety minutes from the platform you can be climbing granite steps through fir forest towards a stone temple at 1,300 metres, on a mountain that pilgrims have walked for well over a thousand years. Why Visit Hengyang
Hengyang is Hunan’s second city and wears the role the way second cities usually do: broad avenues, riverside promenades, enormous noodle breakfasts and almost no international tourists. English signage thins out fast beyond the station, which is precisely the appeal after the polished circuit.
The headline attraction is Mount Heng (衡山), also written Hengshan, the southernmost of the Five Great Mountains. Unlike Mount Tai in Shandong, which is a hard vertical staircase, Mount Heng is a long forested ridge with Taoist halls and Buddhist monasteries sharing the same slope, a paved road with shuttle buses for anyone who does not want to climb, and genuinely good air.
The city is nicknamed Yancheng, “Wild Goose City”, from an old belief that migrating geese flew south only as far as Huiyan Peak. You also get a Song-dynasty academy on a rock at a river confluence and hotel rates roughly half those in Changsha.
Best Time to Visit Hengyang
March to May. Azaleas on the upper slopes, 14–26°C, and the forest at its greenest. Rain is frequent, so treat a waterproof layer as compulsory rather than optional.
June to August. Hot and sticky at 30–37°C in the city, but the mountain runs eight to ten degrees cooler and Nanyue town fills with domestic summer escapees. Book ahead.
September to November — the best window. This is the answer to the best time to visit Hengyang. Dry air, 15–27°C, clear long views from Zhurong Peak, and maples turning on the mid-slopes in early November.
The incense season. Around the eighth lunar month, late September into October, pilgrims arrive in huge numbers for the Nanyue temple fair — remarkable to witness, terrible if you want a quiet room. Avoid the 1–7 October holiday.
December to February. Cold, 2–9°C, with ice and rime on the summit that can close the upper road. Rooms are cheap and the temples are almost empty.
How to Get to Hengyang from Changsha and Guangzhou
Three stations matter, and picking the wrong one costs an hour. Hengyang East (衡阳东站) is the high-speed station for the city, Hengyang Station (衡阳站) downtown handles conventional trains, and Hengshan West (衡山西站) is the high-speed stop closest to the mountain — 25–30 minutes by bus from Nanyue town at the trailhead. If Mount Heng is the priority, get off there.

Top Things to Do in Hengyang
Climb Mount Heng to Zhurong Peak
The mountain is the reason you came. Entry to the Nanyue Hengshan scenic area is around ¥100 in high season, with a shuttle-bus ticket of roughly ¥80 on top if you do not want to walk the full road. The classic pilgrim route runs from Nanyue town past Zhusheng Temple and Magic Mirror Terrace (磨镜台) up to Zhurong Peak (祝融峰) at 1,300 metres, where a small hall built of dark granite blocks sits on the summit rock.

Nanyue Grand Temple
At the foot of the mountain in Nanyue town, Nanyue Grand Temple (南岳大庙) is the largest ancient building complex in southern China: nine courtyards on a single axis, Taoist halls along one flank and Buddhist halls along the other, wrapped in a red wall. Tickets are around ¥60 and the complex opens early. Come at 07:00 and you will share it with people who are here to pray rather than photograph.
Huiyan Peak, the Wild Goose City rock
Right in the middle of downtown, Huiyan Peak (回雁峰) is counted as the first of Mount Heng’s seventy-two peaks. It is small — a wooded hill with a pavilion, a pond and a temple — but it explains the city’s name and costs around ¥25. Thirty minutes is plenty.
Shigu Academy
Shigu Academy (石鼓书院) stands on a rocky spur where the Zheng River joins the Xiang, and was one of the four great academies of the Song dynasty. The buildings are modern reconstructions on the original site, but the setting is superb and entry is free or nominal.
Cai Lun Bamboo Sea
An hour east in Leiyang, the Cai Lun Bamboo Sea (蔡伦竹海) is one of the largest bamboo forests in southern China, named after the Han-dynasty official credited with refining papermaking, who was born locally. Boardwalks, a rafting stretch and cool air even in August. Around ¥60; go by car.

At the mountain — ¥150–400 (US$21–56). Nanyue town is packed with family-run guesthouses and mid-range hotels within walking distance of the temple gate. This is where to sleep if you want an early start on the summit.
Downtown budget and mid-range — ¥130–350 (US$18–49). Domestic chains such as Hanting, Jinjiang Inn and Atour cluster around Hengyang East Station and Jiefang Road, and are used to registering foreign passports.
Splurge — ¥500–1,000 (US$70–140). Four- and five-star properties along the Xiang River and near Nanyue’s scenic gate, several with hot-spring facilities.
Confirm before booking that the property accepts foreign guests; large chains always do, small guesthouses often cannot.
What to Eat

- Layers. The summit runs ten degrees colder than Nanyue town and fog arrives within minutes. A light down jacket is sensible even in October.
