Why Visit Chuxiong
Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture (楚雄彝族自治州) lies squarely on the rail line between Yunnan’s two biggest draws, so it is simple to reach and easy to combine. The capital, Chuxiong city, is a relaxed place with a recreated Yi old town and good food. North of it, Yuanmou county holds the famous earth forests — wind- and water-carved pillars of red sediment that look like a petrified city. The prefecture also protects Heijing, a quiet salt-mining town on the old railway, and Lufeng, where dinosaur skeletons are dug up to this day. And once a year the whole region ignites for the Yi Torch Festival. It is low-key China with a few world-class photo stops.
Best Time to Visit Chuxiong
March to May — the best window. Dry, 16–27°C, clear light for the earth forest, and comfortable for the old towns. This is the best time to visit Chuxiong for photography and walking.
September to November. Second-best: 14–25°C, low rain, good colours.
December to February. Mild days (10–20°C) but cold nights; the earth forest is still open and crowd-free.
July to August. Wet and warm, 20–28°C. The earth forest gets slippery after rain, but this is also when the Yi Torch Festival Chuxiong dates usually fall — late July or August on the lunar calendar (the 24th day of the 6th lunar month). If the festival is your goal, come then and accept the weather.
How to Get to Chuxiong from Kunming
Chuxiong is one of the easiest side trips in Yunnan. The Chuxiong day trip from Kunming is very doable.

Things to Do in Chuxiong
Yuanmou Earth Forest
The headline sight and the reason most travellers come. The Yuanmou earth forest tickets cover two main areas: Wumao Earth Forest (物茂土林), the classic field of red-clay pillars and arches about 90 minutes north of Chuxiong, and Langba Pu (浪巴铺), smaller and less crowded with taller, more varied shapes. Entry runs about ¥70–100 (US$10–14) per area, sometimes sold as a combined pass; an electric shuttle inside costs ¥10–20. Go early or late — the low sun on the red sediment is the whole point, and midday flattens it. Wear proper shoes; the paths are loose and the gullies slick after rain. Allow half a day at Wumao.
Yi People’s Old Town (彝人古镇)
In Chuxiong city itself, this is a recreated Yi-themed quarter of lanes, bridges and staged towers built around a real canal. It is touristy but pleasant, with nightly song-and-dance, taverns and snack streets. Free to walk; the evening light show and bonfire are the draw. Good for a first Yi-culture taste before the remote villages.
Heijing Ancient Salt Town (黑井古镇)
A gem most skip. Heijing sat on the old Kunming–Chengdu railway and grew rich on salt; when the new line bypassed it, the town froze. Today its Qing-dynasty lane houses, a riverside pagoda and old salt wells are intact and quiet. Entry to the town is free; a combined heritage ticket is about ¥30–50 (US$4–7). Stay overnight if you want the lantern-lit lanes without day-trippers. Lufeng Dinosaur Valley (禄丰恐龙谷)
In Lufeng county, a museum and open pit where masses of Jurassic dinosaur bones have been found — including complete skeletons of the long-necked Lufengosaurus. Entry is about ¥70–90 (US$10–13). Good for families and a useful break if you are driving the Kunming–Chuxiong corridor.
Lion Mountain and Hot Springs
Wuding Lion Mountain (武定狮子山), southwest of the city, has a cliff temple said to have hidden a Ming prince and good forest walks. Several hot-spring hotels near the city offer a soak for ¥50–90 (US$7–13) — a easy way to end a day trip.
Yi Torch Festival
The region’s signature event. On the 24th of the 6th lunar month the Yi light huge torches, dance in circles, and in Chuxiong city stage parades, horse races and bonfire parties that run past midnight. Dates shift yearly (usually late July or August); confirm with the tourism office. If you come for it, book trains and hotels weeks ahead — the city fills. Budget — ¥110–180 (US$15–25). City chain hotels by the station. Clean, app check-in.
Mid-range — ¥240–400 (US$33–56). Riverside and old-town-edge hotels in Chuxiong city; best base.
Splurge — ¥500–800 (US$70–110). Hot-spring resorts and a few comfortable city hotels.
In Yuanmou and Heijing, budget ¥150–350 (US$21–49). All register foreign passports.
What to Eat in Chuxiong
Yi and central-Yunnan cooking: hearty and grilled.
- Yi roast lamb and goat. Rubbed with chili and cumin, the festival staple year-round.
- Cross-bridge rice noodles. The Yunnan default, cheap and everywhere (¥10–18).
- Wild mushroom hotpot (菌子火锅). In rainy season, a regional highlight — only eat at established restaurants.
- Liangfen (凉粉). Cold chickpea jelly with vinegar and chili.
- Heijing salt-baked items. Local snacks from the old town.

- Rain. July–August makes the gullies slick — proper shoes, skip if storms are heavy.
